Relocating to Harrisonburg? Set up a doctor's appointment! |
|
Like many in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, my sister and her family had the misfortune of becoming quite sick two weeks ago --- with bronchitis. This happens --- but it became an issue --- because she moved to the area a few months ago.Almost all doctors in this area (it seems) won't see a patient unless they are a current patient of that medical practice. So, if you have recently moved to Harrisonburg or the surrounding area, you ought to schedule a "meet and greet" appointment with your physician of choice ASAP. It's actually rather humorous --- it's not too much of a problem to find a doctor that is accepting new patients, but you can't be a new patient until you have had an appointment with the doctor, completed the appropriate paperwork, etc. So --- if you are new to this area, don't wait until you are sick to think about who your doctor will be --- otherwise, you'll be headed to Rockingham Memorial Hospital, as my sister did. | |

So true...it has happened to me, too. But don't forget about EmergiCare on Cantrell Avenue. Some people think it's the same thing as the free clinic, but it's not. It's for "minor emergencies" when you need to see a doctor relatively quickly but perhaps can't get an appointment with your own doctor quickly enough (or haven't become an established patient at a local practice yet). I've been there several times and have had good experiences...better, I would say, than sitting in the ER.
My only complaint is that their open hours are too limited. In Northern Virginia the Urgent Care centers are actually part of the hospital system and they are open earlier in the morning, later in the evenings, and have longer weekend hours. Perhaps that is not needed in H'burg, or maybe EmergiCare just doesn't have the resources. When the new hospital opens they should consider incorporating an Urgent Care center into the system.

Erin --- thanks for mentioning Emergicare --- indeed another good option. I had a thorn stuck rather securely in my hand a few years ago, and was able to get quick, good care at Emergicare.
Interestingly, when I took my sister to Emergicare a few weeks ago (prior to ending up at RMH), the doctor was out and the receptionist indicated he'd be out for another hour and a half!??
Another thing to note --- RMH has a "Fast Track" program for some ailments --- my sister was seen in about 10 minutes after arriving. (Admittedly, the line became quite long a bit after we came.)
