Save Shen LakeFrom today's Daily News Record, Lake Shenandoah, a.k.a. "Shen Lake," needs to be savedSome key points of this story include:
  • The 36-acre lake is man-made, and has been building up sediment making it difficult to navigate by boat, and more difficult for plant and animal life to survive.
  • State officials have recently lowered the water levels to assess the situation and determine possible courses of action.
  • "The game department won't dredge the lake any time soon" according to Steve Reeser, with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Why? "The project could last up to a year, cost a substantial amount of money - funds the department doesn't have - and possibly spark concern among residents."
  • Herman Hale, president of the Lake Pointe Village Property Owners' Association indicates that the neighborhood values the lake and "is willing to do what it takes to improve the lake."
My first question was --- what would it mean to "dredge" the lake? Per Wikipedia, to "dredge" is to "repositioning of soil from a marine environment, using specialized equipment, in order to initiate infrastructural and/or ecological improvements."

Jeff:
Seems strange that DGIF would drain the lake to study something that they obviously couldn't afford to complete. Meanwhile, we are left to look at the muck.

Larry:
The lake was initially drained in order to determine the feasibility of renovating the lake. Also, aquatic vegetation took over the shallow areas of the lake and this draw-down should help minimize the vegetation in 2008. An additional benefit of this draw-down will place the smaller stunted fish in closer proximity to predator fish and should help restructure the sunfish and crappie population to larger and faster-growing individuals.

Scott, do you have some sort of organization starting for saving the lake? Just curious after seeing the SAVE SHEN LAKE image above. I followed the link from your comment post at DNR.

Larry --- THANK YOU for this additional information! Are you a Lake Pointe resident? And did you talk to DGIF to get this information?

In regards to the SAVE SHEN LAKE image --- no, I haven't started an organization to save the lake, but I would be more than happy to help coordinate any such efforts. My family enjoys that lake, and we hope to see it continue to thrive for years (and decades) to come!

Scott, hell no I'm not a Lake Pointe resident! Ha ha! I am the 30 year fisherman mentioned in the article by Hannah. The info that I gather usually comes from Steve Reeser, not just regarding Lake Shen but also area mountain lakes as well as the South Fork of the 'doah. I think a coordination may be just what the dr. ordered :-)

Scott, if you really are serious about creating a campaign to save the lake, let me know, I have the info on what needs to happen and an estimate of money needed. Send me an email if this is something that you want to pursue. We will also be able to tell who else out there is really serious about saving this grand old lake.
